IS it about standing up and coming on as fatherly authority figures? That’s not what I think I’m doing. I’d rather see myself as a kind of catalyst, in classical terms a Socratic midwife I suppose, teasing out ideas in people around me by challenging traditional assumptions and patterns of thought. So I don’t need the traditional voice of authority – but a diploma in intellectual midwifery would be useful! I’d rather open questions up than close them down. And you think that to do that you have to use a personal voice?

To take an example – in fact, as you’ll realise, much more than an example – what would it mean to you if I collect together and examine the stretches of Roman Satire where women figure or views about women are featured? After all, that may very well be what you think – maybe guess, maybe take for granted – I am about to try to do. Perhaps it is. It wouldn’t be the first time that that sort of project has been attempted. Perhaps it’s a familiar proposition, on the way to being “traditional”? But if it once may have seemed obviously sensible, too – indeed so obviously and so sensible that the point, purpose or relevance of that project wouldn’t need, let alone call for, a justification – I wonder can it seem that way to you right now?
