This, again, is within your realm of choice. THE EYES HAVE IT 43 BEGIN STITCHING THE EYES Note: As an experienced thread artist, I did do some stitching on the hair with the dark thread. As a beginner, you should always start with the eyes. 1. To begin the stitching process with the eye, a bit of outlining is the first move. Always thread paint the tones from darkest to lightest. For this child’s eye, the very dark line at the eyelash and the pupil is the place to start stitching. 2. Finish outlining the eye with thread; then add the medium brown tone that is a shadow reflective of the hair tones above the eyes.

I have chosen a color that is lighter than the fabric for this step. Because thread is three dimensional, it captures light and shadow. These shadows will make the thread look darker. Choosing a lighter thread than the color of the photograph is better at this point in the process. 4. The last color to be added for now is just a bit darker than the previous thread. This is the true moment of blending, as this color is blended over all the other threads. Because it is just a shade darker than the lightest tone, it will blend quite easily.

Detail from Mmm…Good (see full quilt, page 107) 46 THREAD STORIES Since you cannot see Alex’s eyes in the quilt below, the lashes become a large part of the story. Her downcast expression is important to the tale being told, as her attention is on the column of threads that are stacked on top of a stash of fabric at her feet. I started the line of stitching at her lid and placed one line of thread over her lashes and then cut the thread. Each lash is an individual row of stitching. As I added the threads of her skin, I stitched over some of the tips of the lashes, giving them a wispier effect.
