Thus, it appears that if Laplacian stress is the signal for hypertrophy, the pressure and radius terms in the stress equation numerator effect signaling differently. Increased pressure triggers concentric hypertrophy presumably by increasing protein synthesis rate while increased radius primarily triggers eccentric hypertrophy presumably by decreasing degradation rate. In this later situation, the thickness term is not affected, eventually resulting in increased systolic and diastolic stress with adverse consequences for systole while perhaps benefiting diastolic properties.
